Lecture urges students to make the best of WHI and their
education
Lecturer at the Montego Bay Community College
June Clarke, is urging persons to make the best of the
hotel related academic programmes offered at the Western
Hospitality Institute, citing that while the Montego Bay
Community College offers hotel related courses too,
persons who opt to pursue courses at WHI in
collaboration with Hocking College, a first rate college
in the US in the area of hotel related courses, will
acquire qualifications that are credited and both
internationally and locally recognized.

She was recommended to Western
Hospitality Institute by a friend who was also a member
of the St. James lions Club. This comes after she told
her friend that she wished to attend a recognized school
that train and certified persons in hospitality
management. And her friend reiterated her assurance that
WHI fits that bill. To date, she made good on her

Fredrick Gayle attributes his success to WHI
Fredrick Gayle wasn’t successful
in his CXC’s examinations when he left secondary school.
But his teachers at the time assured him that he had the
potential to succeed in terms of academics. And though
he left school with no qualification in his hands to
serve as a base in acquiring gainful employment, he
didn’t give up hope. He had a dream, and so when the
opportunity presents itself he grabbed it with both
hands, thanks to Western Hospitality Institute (WHI).

The Western Mirror News paper featured Mr. Brian
Cooper deceased Dean of George Brown College who was the
Guest Speaker At Western Hospitality Institute
Graduation exercise presenting the following students
with a George Brown Medal for Academic achievement at
WHI and two full scholarships to George Brown college.
The recipients were Ms. Jasmine Blake – President of WHI
student Body and Mr. Nicholas Moore for outstanding
academic achievement. Both students took up their
scholarships at George Brown College in Canada.
On Saturday September 17, 1994
The Western Mirror newspaper featured five Western
Hospitality Institute students’ recipients of full
scholarships to Hocking College to pursue Associate of
Science Degree in Business Management and tourism. The
recipients are:

All students took their scholarships.

The Western Mirror news paper featured WHI graduation
exercise where the managing Director and editor Mr.
Lloyd B Smith Delivered the Keynote address to the
graduates and audience.

The Western mirror news paper feature Western
Hospitality Institute Jamaicans graduating from New
Southern New Hampshire University – USA
April 2000
The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper carried the national
Student culinary competition organized by Western
Hospitality Institute in collaboration with Executive
chefs of Jamaica. The competition saw colleges and
secondary schools from across Jamaica entering.
August 1998
The Jamaica Gleaner Western Bureau issued an article
on WHI staging a island wide work shop for 160 Home
economics teachers form secondary school across the
island. The speaker an the final nights awards Banquet
was Mrs. Florentine Mckoy – President of the Caribbean
Home Economist Association / CHEA. The 160 teachers was
hosted at Hotel in Montego Bay and Negril free of cost
and ten professors from colleges and universities across
the USA and Canada were flown into Jamaica and gave of
their service free of cost. Th event was coordinated as
a charitable contribution from Western Hospitality
Institute in an attempt to assist Jamaica government
teachers with their tourism curriculum.
June 2000
The Western Mirror news paper featured seventeen
students form western Hospitality Institute who were
successful in receiving millions in scholarships to
pursued their studies at Regal constellation college in
Canada.
On May 29, 1994
The Western Mirror newspaper featured a group of
thirty-five (35) Jamaicans students and hotel employees
going off to Canada on a Professional development
scholarship organized by Western Hospitality Institute.
The students took courses at Humber College, George
Brown College and Seneca College in Canada.
Wednesday September 12, 1990
The Western Mirror Newspaper feature Dr. Lorna
Nembhard retired principal of Montego Bay community
college delivering the keynote address at WHI graduation
exercise.
Wednesday September 15, 1993
The Western Mirror feature another group of Jamaican
that was awarded scholarship to study at Hocking college
in Neslonville Ohio, they are, Vilma Smith, Eunice
Grant, Jackry Fletcher.
On August 18, 1996
The Toronto daily gleaner feature five Jamaicans who
achieve academic excellence at Regal constellation
college in Canada, The function to honor the students
was held at the constellation hotel in Canada, They key
note speaker was the Member of Parliament for the
province of Ontario Mr. John Hastings. The students were
Patrick Lopez, Jeneive Facey, Norma James, Stephanie
Glanville, Eloretta Wedderburn.
On June 2001
Of the 56 students who
successfully completed the degree at Hocking College
only 30 was present at Hocking College graduation
exercise –
USA with their Associate of Science in Hotel and
Restaurant management, Posing with the President of
Hocking college Dr. John Light. Of the one thousand
students graduated only twenty-eight made it to the
prestigious President List of which four were WHI
students.
On August 1998
The Jamaican daily gleaner/ Toronto chapter issues a
release of twenty-four (24) WHI Jamaican students who
graduated form Regal Constellation College in Canada.
On Wednesday July 3, 1991
The western Mirror issued a news release on WHI
graduation, Mrs. Cecile Walden Principal of Sam Sharp
Teachers college delivered the keynote address the
graduates and audience.
Thursday January 16, 2003
The Jamaica observer national news paper feature a
photograph on it front page with Cecil cornwall –
President of western Hospitality Institute, Dr. Rae
Davis, President University of Technology, Jamaica Dr.
Francis Kwansa- Head of the Masters Program University
of Delaware and Dr. Fred Demeeico – Chair for the
Hospitality Program at the University of Delaware. The
occasion was the signing of the Memorandum of
understanding between University of Delaware and the
University of technology, Jamaica, The president of WHI
was asked to make a presentation on WHI and took the
Board of advisors form the University of Delaware on a
tour of WHI.
June 2002
The St. Lucia newspaper carried an article that
Jamaican institution bestowed Honorary Degree on Ms.
Bethia Parle, President of the St. Lucia Hotel & Tourism
Association and the first female president of the
Caribbean Hotel Association CHA. Mrs. Parle was invited
to Jamaica as guest of Western Hospitality Institute and
was the Keynote speaker at WHI annual graduation
exercise. The Institute was proud to present Mrs.Parle
with an Honorary Associate of science Degree in Hotel &
restaurant Management.
June 2004
All Island Boss Ms. Marcia Brown, director of
Training at the Ritz Carlton rosehall Hotel was special
guest at WHI Graduation dinner exercise where she
delivered the keynote address.
Thursday August 19, 2004
The National Gleaner Newspaper names us “The
Hospitality Education Service Institution”. In an
article released by the National News paper the Gleaner
the captioned read “ Western Hospitality Institute makes
service good business” This came as a result of an
intuition achievements and the service it gives to its
students.
Wednesday August 25. 2004
The western mirror news paper news release under the
heading “ Western Hospitality Institute Graduation”
spoke of Mr. Cornwall – President of WHI masters degree
achievements and WHI bestowing of an Honorary Associate
of Science Degree on Swiss Master Chef Hank Schenck for
his outstanding contribution to culinary arts to the
Jamaican tourism industry and WHI in particular. Dr.
Candace Vancko – President for the State University of
New York / SUNY DELHI delivered assisted in presenting
the award and delivered the keynote address at the
graduation exercise.
Outgoing board chairman Dr. Nadine Scott and Board
member Dr. Francis Kwansa presented Mr. Cornwall, with a
surprise plaque for his outstanding service to the
institution and for earning his Masters Degree.

The International cake exploration Society feature
Western Hospitality Institute President Cecil Cornwall
presenting a Honorary of Science Degree in the area of
Cake Decorating and Baking to The founder of the
International cake exploration society – USA Mrs. Betty
Joe Stienman and the International celebrity cake lady ,
who own and operate the world only cake Museum Mrs.
Francis Kuyper form California , USA. Both ladies was
invited as Guest of WHI to the Institute International
cake exhibition competition held every two years. The
Key note speaker at May 2003 event was Minister of Local
Government and Sports Most Honorable Portia Simpson-Miller. Mrs. Miller was also featured in the
International press for her presentation at the this
event.
The competition/exhibition see participants from
across the world from as far as South Africa. In 2001 the competition was launched in collaboration with
the Jamaica Cake Decorators Association and the Winner
for the professional category was Mr. Marco Antonio Lopez Master cake decorator from Argentina. The
recipients for the Betty Jo Stienmarn Award was a
student from WHI Mr. Euchen Richards, who won the Best
Amateur in the student category. In 2003 the
competition was launched in collaboration with Jamaica
Association of Sugar Artist and the winner of the
Professional / Master category was Mr. Herland Rocca
Pedrazza from Argentina.

Other Happenings & Events
Western Hospitality Institute Host Hocking
college Students
It is quite customary based on the close relationship
that WHI shares with Hocking College that when their
students form the Arts and Science department travel to
Jamaica we assist them with the organizing of their
program and events in Jamaica. In December 2003 Western
Hospitality Institute hosted a group of approximately
Hocking College students at your facilities in Montego
bay Jamaica for inter-cultural classes. Our students
assisted them with tours and meeting other Jamaican.
Western Hospitality Institute Host University
of Delaware Students
In January 2002 Western Hospitality Institute hosted
a group of sixteen undergraduate students and a
professor form the University of Delaware tourism
program. WHI organized their entire four week tours in
Jamaica and appointed the President of the student body
to travel with the group through out their intercultural
tour across the island. The program was dubbed a success
and as such the institute is asked to host another group
in January 2005.
Western Hospitality Honor Dr. John Light –
President of Hocking College USA
ON November 9, 2001 Western Hospitality Institute
flew to Jamaica the President of Hocking College Dr.
John Light hosted him at the Ritz Carlton in Montego bay
Jamaica and a packed itinerary was presented to him. The
weekend was packed with activities as he was taken on a
tour to meet successful pass students who own manage or
are managers within large and small hotels in Jamaica.
On Friday November 9, 2001 at 7:00pm a dedication
ceremony was held in his honor where a lecture room was
named in honor of him “ The Dr. John Light Lecture Room”
the Saturday November 30, 2001 WHI organized a Hocking /
Alumni Dinner at one of Montego Bay’s finest restaurant
the Native restaurant in his Honor . Alumni turn out in
their numbers to pay tribute to this great Hero who has
contributed so much to the Jamaica Hospitality & Tourism
industry in the form of scholarships and affordable
education.. The Awards Dinner was held under the
distinguished patronage of the Honorable Custos of
Montego Bay Clarence Nelson. Other tourism officials and
dignitaries form Sandals and Super clubs Hotel in
Jamaica were present.
Western Hospitality Institute Host their Most
Distinguished Lecture Series
WHI is proud of its track record and the trend it has
set in hospitality education here in Jamaica. WHI
Distinguished Lecture Series serves to use professional
lecturers locally and internationally with a Doctorate
to do guest lecturer at the Institute. The topics
selected are usually the areas of expertise for the
presenters and it is usually compulsory for all students
to attend.
The Lecture Series run twice per year.

Western Hospitality Professional lecture Series
This event is held once a year where by graduates of
Western Hospitality Institute who hold management
position in different areas of the Hotel and Tourism
industry are asked to do a 30 – 60 minutes presentation
to the new WHI students on their roles and
responsibilities and how their department functions. The
student’s then has a chance to question the
professionals on any theory subjects they might have
done in class , that require some further practical
understanding. In every major large hotel industry in
Jamaica there is one or several WHI student in
management position. |
