Point Village administrator urges persons to study at WHI-rewarding

She was recommended to Western Hospitality Institute by a friend who was also a member of the St. James lions Club. This comes after she told her friend that she wished to attend a recognized school that train and certified persons in hospitality management. And her friend reiterated her assurance that WHI fits that bill. To date, she made good on her friend’s advice and pursued studies at [WHI].

And now, it has paid off for her. “I wanted to go to a school that is recognized that offers hospitality courses and so when I told my friend she told me about WHI. And so I started in the September of 1999. The programme was intensive and it was offered in the afternoon. There were lots of works that we had to undertake and I had to complete in a year time,” informed Gloria Bonsu-okoto, administrator at Point Village hotel.
Continuing, she said, “The standard of the school is high and persons had to satisfy the stipulated standard. I was at the time doing 10 courses per semester. And we had to complete in a year in order to continue the degree programme at Hocking College in the US. In addition to the courses that we had to read, we had to attend seminars in relation to the programme so there were lots of work but I had done very well,” she told the Western Mirror.

And where qualification was concerned, Bonsuokoto was qualified. But there were others who didn’t arm with the necessary subjects but began the programme and succeeded as well.

WHI recognizes that there are many persons who may not have the necessary CXCs but nonetheless have the ability to succeed academically. Among several factors that may deprive some persons of acquiring subjects according to Cecil Cornwall, the boss of WHI, are financial constraints, poor preparation, and immaturity. In light of this, WHI create an opportunity for persons who feel that they are able to take on the courses and succeed.

“I had some subjects at the time and WHI accepted them but there were other persons who were academically capable and so they did well too. My GP was good and I got a certificate with distinction and when I got to Hocking College I did well as well. I got my degree with Hons. While at Hocking College the learning environment was conducive and the lecturers were welcoming,” explained Bonsuokoto. And the State University in New York was her next stop. She got a BA in hospitality management and again with honors.

“The work was not challenging for me but one had to work hard and be focused. The American institution for Motel and Hotel Associations gave me an award for my outstanding performance. Some of the areas covered were internal hotel development, accounting for the hospitality industry, food and beverage, sales and marketing and hospitality,” said Bonsu-okoto, former award winning Vice President of [WHI].
Armed with such knowledge it was now time to work. So she got a job at Adams Mark Hotel in Ohio as Accounting Personnel. Also, the worked with Holiday Inn in Ohio as Night Manager. She said that having worked at the hotel that is operated by Hocking College helped her to give her best in other working environments.

But she had experiences in different areas of the hotel industry, and with experience in the capacity of accounting at an accounting organization in Jamaica, and having worked in the said capacity at Sea Castle etc, she said that this helped her to get an Executive accounting position at the Adam Mark Hotel.

Now at Point Village Hotel in Negril working as an administrator, Bonsu-okoto is mandated to restructuring the accounting systems there among other things. After having served in areas such as Night Manager, front office Manager, Accountant, Bonsuokoto said she felt that she has made her mark and continues to do so. “I am urging persons to study at WHI as the school’s programme is in collaboration with Hocking College and is more recognized than any other degree from any university both here and abroad. WHI standard is high and after studying it will be rewarding,” assured Bonsuokoto, who sits on the Kenilworth’s management team, and former President of
